19-year-old awarded massive prize for making breakthrough anti-viral drug out of corn

When 19-year-old Adam Kovalčík flew from his home in Dulovce, Slovakia to the 2025 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Columbus, Ohio, he didn’t expect to win it, much less potentially change medicine. In his presentation, Kovalčík uncovered a new way to synthesize an anti-viral drug in a much quicker and cheaper way than typically done. After the competition was done, Kovalčík walked away $100,000 richer, and it was all thanks to corn husks.

"I cannot describe this feeling," Kovalčík told Business Insider. "I did not expect such a huge international competition to be won by someone from a small village in a small European country, so it was just pure shock."

How Shepherdstown, West Virginia got its first Pride parade this year

On June 1, Shepherdstown, West Virginia will get its first-ever Pride parade. It is organized by performer and activist Joan Marie Moossy, who moved to the town permanently from New York City in 2022 after years of being a part-time resident. Moossy, now 70, experienced queer activism and community throughout her time in New York, where she counted as mentors and friends the great avant-garde performer Ethyl Eichelberger and Gilbert Baker, creator of the Pride flag. It was from people like them, she says, that she learned about the power of activism—that it really could create positive change and progress.

So, create she did. Shepherdstown, also home to Shepherd University, has a longstanding reputation for being queer friendly, one Moossy herself experienced for the first time over 30 years ago. This past October, Moossy’s idea for a Pride parade received a bounty of support from the Shepherdstown Town Council and local businesses, and it becomes a reality June 1 at 6 p.m. The town is a small one–about 1,537 people as of 2023– and the parade will travel the length of about two blocks, as the town’s other parades do. Moossy anticipates 25 groups–including everyone from the ACLU of West Virginia to Kevin Bacon’s SixDegrees charity to the Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church, among many others. In all, as many as 175 people will be marching in it. Local businesses have stepped up and created their own Pride programming for the weekend as well, all with the parade at its core.

Fisherman casts his line and reels in a drowning woman, saving her life

On a quiet night at Dias Beach in Mossel Bay, South Africa, a 31-year-old woman went for a midnight swim and nearly didn’t make it back. Strong rip currents pulled her farther from shore, and with no one else in the water, her situation quickly turned dangerous.

A group of local fishermen noticed her struggling in the surf. While others might have frozen or fumbled with what to do, one of them came up with a plan that no one could’ve predicted.

Got tooth pain? It's probably because you're related to this 465-million-year-old fish.

We’ve all felt it: that ice cream that’s just a little too cold, that popcorn that gets a little too stuck, that coffee that’s a little too hot. But how did such sensitivity in our teeth develop? Researchers at the University of Chicago have begun to develop an answer, and it’s not what you’d expect.

What they found was that ancient fish were covered in small, bumpy structures that helped them traverse the ocean and avoid predators. These are called odontodes, which functioned almost like armor, and these structures contained miniscule tubes of dentine. In humans, dentine is the layer under the enamel of our teeth. Dentine is very sensitive because it ensures the safety of the tooth’s internal nerves, tissues, and blood vessels, also known as dental pulp. According to Cleveland Clinic, “the nerves in your dental pulp detect changes in temperature and pressure. The resulting discomfort lets you know something is wrong.” The same, it turns out, was true for fish some 465 million years ago, though their odontodes were exterior features. Through the beauty of evolution, we developed similar attributes, albeit in our mouths instead of on our skin.

Artist uses 100 different typewriters to methodically create unique artistic masterpieces

There are numerous painting and drawing techniques, each combining a multitude of tools, methodologies, and unique materials. Artists use every medium from paints and pencils to sponges, brushes, their fingers, and more. They dry brush, glaze, stipple, pour, dab, and splatter. There's also art in the digital frontier building layers and adding creative effects. But what about typing?

James Cook is an artist based in London who uses his 100 different typewriters to make art. Originals can sell for anywhere from $2500 to almost $20,000. He found the technique after coming across Paul Smith, an amateur artist who was born with cerebral palsy. Paul’s parents had given him a typewriter to learn to read and write, but he instead made drawings. After reading about Paul's story, Cook was inspired to get his hands on his own typewriter.

I’m guessing you’ve heard of a “question box.” If you haven’t, it’s simply a tool sometimes used by teachers to illicit discussion around different subjects. This teaching strategy falls under the category of active learning or student engagement. The idea behind the premise is to find instructional activities that energize students to think, investigate, discuss, and create, solving problems as they struggle through complex questions and make decisions that enhance their overall student learning.

One teacher posting under the name @goatsnsheeps on Reddit, put this strategy into action with their fourth grade class. They created a box for the students to place any type of question they wanted answered into, and some of the students' responses are amazing.

As Democrats try to reverse transgender military ban, trans military heroes speak out

When Executive Order 14183 was signed into existence this past January, it banned any military personnel who identified as transgender from service. Though it was initially blocked a few months later, on May 6 the Supreme Court ruled that the ban could continue. As the Military Timesshared on May 15, “The Defense Department will begin screening troops for gender dysphoria during their routine physicals in an effort to boot transgender service members from the armed forces.” But it appears Democrats in the House of Representatives are now attempting to reverse the ban once more. The new proposed ruling, as Military Times shared in another article, “would bar the defense secretary from separating any member of the armed forces on the basis of gender identity, including a diagnosis or potential diagnosis of gender dysphoria.’” It would also approve health care for transgender individuals in the military.

There are approximately 4200 transgender individuals currently in the military who want an opportunity to serve their country and have been “serving honorably in the military and have been doing so for years,” according to Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE). Several thousand more are veterans with families. Amidst the turmoil in the government, countless transgender military personnel have continued to speak out, many of them decorated and high-ranking.
